Cloudy, Rainy Night at Empire State Building

Walking with Ro, I took this shot of the Empire State a few hours ago. Light but steady rain here in New York tonight, leaving the building’s top floors obscured by low clouds.

Skyping the State of the Union

Think I’m going to do something different this year and use Skype chat as a social-media companion while I watch tonight’s State of the Union speech. (Sorry, Twitter. Just experimenting a bit. You’ll understand, I hope.)

If you want to join in, be sure to either leave your Skype info in the comments or send me a contact request today on their system. You can find me at handle P-Mickey or by email pete@roscoelabs.com.

I’ll be on a little early, maybe 8:30ish Eastern. Speech starts at 9. Looking forward to chatting with a smaller but more engaged group of people responding more directly to one another. My theory is that those will be the advantages over tweeting, but we’ll see how it goes.

Etta James Tribute

While running some errands today, I snapped this picture of the Apollo Theater’s tribute to R&B legend Etta James. Black-and-white effect was done with a filter from my iPhone’s Path app.

Stop SOPA!

Today I’ve changed the avatars on my Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ accounts to the funny little graphic that accompanies this blog post. It’s a small personal statement of my opposition to the Stop Online Piracy Act, which is now pending before Congress.

In my opinion, this piece of legislation, despite its harmless-sounding title, would seriously undermine free speech on the Internet if enacted. Everyone who uses the Internet should be deeply concerned about it.

Bloggers, developers, and other geeks are already very much up in arms about SOPA. But I believe it’s something that even more casual users should be paying attention to as well.

To that end, I’d highly recommend PC World’s primer on SOPA to anyone who would like to get up to speed on the issue. The magazine’s explanation is thorough, even-handed, and written in plain English.

[UPDATE: All profiles back to normal now that SOPA has deservedly died. That said, I think users should still be on the lookout since politicians on both sides of the aisle have indicated there may yet be a different legislative effort to combat piracy in other ways.]

What a Blockhead!
